How to keep your dog safe during a cyclone
When a cyclone is on the way, it’s not just you who needs to be prepared—your furry friend does too! Dogs can sense changes in the weather, and strong winds, heavy rain, and loud noises can be stressful for them. Here’s how to keep your pup safe and calm during a cyclone.
Before the Cyclone
- Create an Emergency Kit – Pack essentials like food, water, a leash, medications, and comfort items like their favorite toy or blanket.
- Identify a Safe Space – Find a secure area inside your home where your dog can stay safely, away from windows and doors.
- Microchip & ID Tags – Ensure your dog’s collar has updated identification tags and consider microchipping in case they get lost.
- Stock Up on Supplies – Have at least a week’s worth of food and water for your dog in case of disruptions.
During the Cyclone
- Keep Your Dog Indoors – Do not let your dog outside, even if they seem restless.
- Stay Calm and Comforting – Your dog takes cues from you. Speak softly, offer treats, and create a soothing environment.
- Use White Noise – Play calming music or turn on a fan to drown out the loud sounds of the storm.
- Provide a Safe Shelter – A crate lined with blankets can feel like a cozy den, helping reduce anxiety.
After the Cyclone
- Check for Hazards – Look for sharp debris, fallen trees, or downed power lines before letting your dog outside.
- Monitor for Stress Signs – If your dog seems anxious or refuses to eat, offer extra comfort and patience.
- Re-establish Routine – Get back to their normal schedule to help them feel secure.
By planning ahead, you can keep your pup safe and sound—even when the weather outside is frightful!
