Understanding Your Oodle’s Body Language: What Those Tail Wags & Head Tilts Mean

If you’re lucky enough to share your life with an Oodle (like us here at 3 Spoilt Dogs) , whether it’s a Cavoodle, Moodle, Labradoodle, or any of their curly-coated cousins,  you already know how expressive these pups can be. From dramatic head tilts to enthusiastic tail wags, our Oodles have a special way of communicating. But what are they really trying to say?

Let’s decode some of the most common Oodle body language signals so you can better understand what’s going on inside that fluffy little head.

  1. The Famous Head Tilt
Is there anything cuter than when your Oodle cocks their head to the side as you talk to them? This classic move isn’t just for show — it’s your pup’s way of trying to understand you better. Dogs tilt their heads to adjust their ears and pinpoint sounds more accurately. In Oodles, it often means:
    • “I’m curious!”
    • “Did you just say ‘treat’?”
    • “I’m trying to figure you out.”

It’s a sign of engagement and interest — so keep chatting!

  1. Tail Wags: Not All the Same
We often think a wagging tail means a happy dog, but the way your Oodle wags their tail matters.
    • High, fast wag: Excited and happy, especially when greeting you or anticipating play.
    • Low, slow wag: Uncertain or nervous, often paired with a cautious stance.
    • Still tail or tucked tail: Fear, anxiety, or submission

Paying attention to tail position and speed gives you real insight into how your pup is feeling.

  1. Ears Up, Down, or Sideways
Oodles come with a variety of ear types, but their positions still convey emotion:
    • Ears forward: Alert and interested.
    • Ears back against the head: Nervous or submissive.
    • Relaxed ears: Calm and content.
  1. Play Bows
When your Oodle stretches their front legs out, rear end up, and maybe gives a playful bark, it’s an invitation to play! This is one of the clearest and happiest signals you’ll see. It means:
    • “Let’s have fun!”
    • “Chase me!”

It’s also a polite way for dogs to signal friendly intentions.

  1. Lip Licking and Yawning
While it might seem like your Oodle’s just tired, excessive yawning or lip licking can be a sign of stress or discomfort. You might notice this in unfamiliar environments, around new dogs, or during grooming sessions. It’s your pup’s subtle way of self-soothing.
  1. Leaning or Sitting on You
If your Oodle leans against you, places a paw on your knee, or sits on your foot — congratulations, you’re officially their person. These actions are signs of affection, trust, and a desire to be close.
  1. The Zoomies
Those sudden bursts of energy where your Oodle tears around the yard or living room at lightning speed? Known as the “zoomies,” this is your pup’s way of burning off excess energy or expressing sheer joy. It’s totally normal (and hilarious).

Learning to read your Oodle’s body language strengthens your bond and helps you respond to their needs in the moment. Whether it’s a playful head tilt, a nervous lip lick, or a joyful tail wag, each gesture tells a story.

So next time your Oodle gives you that look, you’ll be one step closer to understanding exactly what they mean.
